Mostar and Kravica Waterfall

Where the East meets the West

Mostar is a city in Bosnia and Herzegovina, about two and a half hours from Split by road. It sits along the Neretva River and is best known for its iconic bridge, the Stari Most, which gives the city much of its character and its name. The bridge was originally built in the 16th century during the Ottoman period, destroyed during the war in the 1990s, and carefully rebuilt and reopened in 2004. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The old town around the bridge is full of small shops, restaurants and cafes set in stone buildings that reflect the city’s Ottoman past. The streets can get busy in the summer, but the area is pleasant to walk through and easy to explore in a few hours. From the bridge itself, and from the banks of the river below, the views are among the most photographed in the region.

Mostar is a city with a complex recent history, and that history is still visible in parts of the city away from the tourist center. For visitors who are curious, it adds an important layer of context to the experience.
